Step into the tranquil rice paddies of Niigata Prefecture, Japan. In Tanbo ("rice paddy" in Japanese), two players cultivate their fields, manage sacred snakes, and compete for the greatest harvest in this elegant abstract strategy game.
Snakes are revered in Japanese rice-farming tradition — the more snakes inhabit your paddy, the richer the harvest. But population control is key: too many snakes and the balance tips against you. Players take turns placing and moving pieces in a mancala-inspired system, carefully programming their moves to outmanoeuvre their opponent and maximise their yield.
- 🌾 Unique farming theme — rooted in Japanese agricultural folklore
- 🐍 Mancala-inspired mechanics — deceptively deep, fast to learn
- ⚡ Quick play — games last just 5–20 minutes
- 👥 Strictly 2-player — pure head-to-head strategy
Designed by Ikumo Tasaka and published by Musoka Studio, Tanbo is a beautifully focused duel that rewards patience and forward thinking. For 2 players, ages 8+. View on BoardGameGeek
